Count Moïse de Camondo’s Paris mansion, built between 1911 and 1914 by the architect René Sergent, overlooks Parc Monceau and is itself surrounded by an elegant garden designed by Achille Duchêne. Created to house his outstanding collections of 18th-century furniture, paintings, carpets, porcelain and silverware, Moïse de Camondo chose to give this ‘hôtel particulier’ the appearance of an 18th-century home. He gave his collections to the French State, confiding their upkeep to Les Arts Décoratifs, in memory of his son Nissim, killed in the First World War. The factors making this museum such a special place are fully examined here for the first time, including the family’s history, the collector’s tastes and the life, daily upkeep and destiny of the house itself. The photographs make use of natural light to reveal the distinctiveness of each of the rooms and works of art within them, hour by hour, season by season.
Edited by Marie-Noel de Gary, head curator of the Musée Nissim de Camondo. Texts by François Loyer, Bertrand Rondot, Nora Seni and Sophie Le Tarnec. Photographs by Jean-Marie del Moral.
